Rare super well-illustrated biography of the first ever cycling star from Slovakia.
In 1947, four Czechoslovak cyclists participated in the Amateur Road Cycling World Championships, including the 22-year-old Vlastimil Ružicka. Due to the intense heat on race day, all four Czechoslovak riders withdrew early.
In 1950, Ružicka was part of the Czechoslovak national team that participated in the three-country stage race, the Course de la Paix / Friedensfahrt. The newcomer to the team won four stages and finished third in the final standings as the best Czechoslovak. In addition to the 1950 Peace Race, Ružicka was also a member of the Czechoslovak Course de la Paix / Friedensfahrt team in 1951, 1953, 1954, and 1957. He was not allowed to start in 1956 because he had a falling out with the national coach and was not nominated.[1] His best final result was second place in 1954, winning a total of twelve stages. In 1950, 1951, and 1954, he won the team classification with the Czechoslovak team. In his last Course de la Paix / Friedensfahrt start in 1957, he was able to cross the finish line first for the last time on the 6th stage.
At the Czechoslovak Cyclocross Championships, Ružicka won the title in 1952, finished second in 1953, and third in 1954.
He also won several stages in the Tour osf Slovakia as well as many other races behind the Iron Curtain.
