Summer 2019: thanks also to the support of the media, the athletes of our national team, involved in the Women's Football World Cup in France, finally conquered the hearts of Italian men and women. Although on the eve no one would have bet on even passing the group, the ride of Sara Gama and her companions only stops at the quarter-finals. While the Italians were received by President Mattarella, the Americans, led by a Megan Rapinoe in a state of grace, went on to win their fourth World Cup. In doing so, they argue with everyone, from the federation, which does not recognize their right to equal pay compared to their (much poorer) male colleagues, to President Trump, irritated by the impudence of the captain, LGBTQ+ activist and icon of an America opposite to that of the tycoon. Thus, while in New York Rapinoe harangues the crowd by agitating this alternative vision, at the Quirinale Gama reminds more softly, but with great firmness and determination, that Italian sportswomen have the same prerogatives as their colleagues: what is Italy waiting for to recognize the right to professionalism also for women? On the occasion of the new, highly anticipated edition of the Women's World Cup, Captains courageous tells the different contexts in which the stories and communication strategies of these two great sports leaders are placed. A journey into the world of women's team sport (still ignored by a narrative anchored to the figure of the single, heroic but isolated athlete) which exposes the prejudices still alive and beating in the heart of the West and reminds us how courage never has an impact in history if it is not accompanied by a healthy dose of realism, that is, politics.
